In the summer of 2018 I began learning to work with clay. This gallery is a partial catalog, in chronological order, of what I have produced since then.
(Unless otherwise indicated, all pieces were wheel-thrown from a dark-firing stoneware clay and reduction-fired to cone 10 in a gas kiln.)

Jar with white raku glaze (November 2019)
3.75" H. White and matte copper glazes. The modern American studio version of raku firing involves heating the bisque-fired and glazed ware very quickly to orange-red heat in a small gas-fired kiln, then immediately transferring the piece into a metal container filled with sawdust or newspaper. The organic material catches fire, and a lid is clapped onto the container to create a smoky reducing atmosphere. Copper-containing glazes produce metallic shades, the smoke creates mottling (and sometimes crackling) on a white glaze, and unglazed areas turn a deep matte gray or black.
